Heart, Hustle, Determination

What a weekend of suck. More correctly, what a month and a half of suck. These past two games were extremely disappointing, and make me want to bitch. No one in black and gold showed any of the three characteristics in my title, save maybe Bennet Royer on Friday night. That is the difference between the BADgers this weekend and the Huskies. One team cared, one team really didn't seem to give a damn about playing like shit in front of the biggest crowds of the year. This is why our team is regarded so poorly in the hockey world, because we get some impressive upset wins, but we play like junk so much that everyone forgets about the good things.

I don't think I need to elaborate on any of the crappiness, but I would appreciate it so much if our powerplay would just take some quick shots when they have an open lane instead of letting the door close. Cripes, there's so much they could do, so many little things that would make their game overall so much better, but herein depends the heart, hustle and determination again. Perhaps I'm overanalyzing, but why is it that our team waddles out onto the ice after intermissions and heads to the lockerroom moping like the world hates them, while every other team that visits skates out like they haven't played in weeks regardless of the score or the period? Even a little change in attitude like that would make things so much better.

Now on to the fun stuff. I don't know what it is, but there's something about 'really good' hockey players that just grinds my gears to no end. This, in our current case, means Kyle Turris. I realize he has been drafted #3, but out of the 4 games I've seen him play, there isn't really anything I saw that would scream for the big deal everyone makes out of him. He's also a whiny bitch, and those two things really annoy me, while guys like Davis Drewiske remain a solid force on the blueline and don't really get much of a passing glance. I love it when guys like him get a captaincy, because there's so much more than just being highly touted and scoring lots of points. You can have a team of all-stars, but without stable guys to back them up, the team will be nothing. I guess I don't have to worry much about Turris, though, because he really needs to start eating something or working out, or I don't know what if he expects to make it anywhere in the NHL. Skill only gets you so far when you've got the big guys on the other team looking for you.

tUMD comes next, and it looks to be another set of embarassing losses, maybe a scrounged up tie for one of them, but we've never performed well against tUMD at home, and play like this weekend is only going to make things worse. Can't wait for that one. I really wish Jamie Russell would do something to get it across to these guys that they have to show up and play.

As a final note, the Battle of Alberta tonight is a perfect example of the difference between Curtis Joseph and Mikka Kippursof. 0-5 and 4-1 respectively. Hopefully Calgary's kicking themselves in the rear for that decision.
